Located in the heart of Newcastle CBD, Curry & Vetkoek Den is a cherished culinary gem that brings the rich, authentic flavors of Durban-style Indian cuisine right to your plate. This beloved restaurant at 27 Scott Street is renowned for its warm hospitality, generous portions, and food that transports you straight to the bustling spice markets and street vendors of Durban.
The menu here is a celebration of traditional Indian curries and classic South African favorites like vetkoek and bunny chow, each bursting with robust, aromatic spices and expertly balanced flavors. Their mutton biryani, praised by locals such as Chris Lombard, is a fragrant masterpiece – tender pieces of mutton mingling with fluffy saffron-dusted rice, infused with delicate layers of cardamom, cinnamon, and clove. Equally compelling are their curries, which embody the true essence of Durban cooking: vibrant, hearty, and layered with a soulful depth that awakens your senses.
For lovers of the iconic bunny chow, Curry & Vetkoek Den is a true haven. Nollie De Jonge enthusiastically recommends the bunny chow here as the best in Newcastle, and it's easy to see why. Their fillings are generous and fresh, encased in perfect, fluffy bread, soaking up every drop of rich, spicy gravy. The roti kebabs, especially when topped with vinegar chilies, offer a delightful tangy kick, making every bite exciting and memorable, as Wayne experienced firsthand.
Stepping inside, you immediately feel at home. The friendly and genuine service by owners Uncle Veron and Aunty Rita adds a personal touch that turns a simple meal into a comforting experience. Yvette Pretorius attests to their welcoming nature and the excellent value offered, with portions often ample enough to share. Whether you're stopping by for a quick takeaway or enjoying a relaxed meal, the atmosphere is warm, inviting, and unpretentious — a perfect reflection of the strong community spirit behind the kitchen.
Beyond just food, Curry & Vetkoek Den carries a legacy — having served Newcastle patrons for over a decade. Sithembiso Mkhize highlights their longevity and consistent quality, proving their commitment to reasonable pricing without compromising on taste. The restaurant also caters to private events, making it a versatile choice for gatherings and celebrations.

I lived in Durban for 16 years and have been in Newcastle for 44 years. The mutton biryani as well as curries served here are of the best, and typical Durban and true Indian style !
